TIP TO TIP
Twenty-eight stops from the Met Cloisters to Seaport.
“A long stretch of road will teach you more about yourself than a hundred years of quiet introspection.”
Met Cloisters
I've always wanted to visit the Cloisters but still have never been, so it seems like an apt start to our tour.
The Little Red Lighthouse
The target destination of one of the longest runs I did while marathon training. The GWB is also the subject of one of my favorite lines in musical theater.
Columbia University / Morningside Park
First place I ever stayed by myself in NYC, for a high school journalism program. I still remember learning to longboard for the first time in Morningside Park.
Columbus Circle / Central Park
The start to countless memories in Central Park and the most popular spot to meet for runs.
Carnegie Hall
I was (and am) obsessed with create-your-own series, especially musical theater concerts. Some standouts: Yuja Wang, Mandy Gonzalez, Lea Michele…
Majestic Theatre
Phantom was the first musical I saw as a child.
8th Ave
A nostalgic walk for everything from Broadway to Port Authority to coffee shops to the NYT building.
Victory Boxing Club
Kickboxed here for a year. Unrelated, I was also trading at the time.
Hudson Yards Apartment
First lease after moving back to the city. Used the rooftop a lot less than we should have.
Midtown commute
It wasn't fun to cut across Times Square every day, but there was a lot to people watch.
NYPL / Bryant Park
Though this wasn't my primary library (Stavros Niarchos is down the street), the painted sky and the exhibits are pretty special to me.
One Vanderbilt / Grand Central
The building where I used to work. Never actually made it up to Summit.
Karaoke Spot
My go-to karaoke spot since I was an intern. Next door to one of my favorite Korean restaurants in the city.
K-town
Intern summer. The less said about it the better.
Chelsea Plant District
The start of my (short-lived) plant parent era.
Flatiron Sublet
Spent a turbulent and delightful four months here when I first moved back to the city.
Whitney
The cafe on the top floor was my favorite spot to write during my garden leave.
West Side Highway
Probably clocked a few hundred miles on the run from midtown to the Battery.
Pommes Frites
Always made a stop here on family trips as a child.
Lafayette Hall
Stayed in a triple-turned-single here as an intern.
SoHo shops
- a.Mochidoki
- b.Harney & Sons
- c.Eileen's Special Cheesecake
A few of my favorites as a one-time subscriber of the now-defunct tea-of-the-month club.
Lanterne Candle Lab
The starting point I remember best for Run for Chinatown.
Yu & Me Books
A lovely bookstore with lovely events. I've probably been to more readings and open mics here than anywhere else in the city.
NY County Court
Frequented this location leading up to my thrice-extended grand jury service.
Mysterious Book Shop
Maybe my favorite bookstore in the city, as someone who grew up on Sherlock Holmes, Arsène Lupin, and Agatha Christie.
Oculus
Honestly never really thought about how iconic this spot was — it was just the most convenient collection of shops, and often the closest. Took the underground passage to Brookfield more times than I can remember.
200 West
First full-time job.
Gateway
First apartment in NYC.
Harry's
It felt right to end here in Seaport, at my first NYC steakhouse and the place I've gone after the end of every job so far in my career.
